Designing your own division with the
DYOD Template
Introduction
DYOD allows you to design your own division, with up to 18
infantry regiments, 4 cavalry regiments and 6 artillery pieces. You have a limited budget of points that are
expended on commanders and units.
Commander points are used to allocated commander attributes for you
division commander and each brigade and battery commander, with 0 being the
lowest and 6 the highest.
Unit points are used for infantry, cavalry and artillery and
the formula for each unit is:
Strength x
Quality x Weapon Type = unit points.
Unit strength can be assigned from 1 (lowest) to 6 (highest),
but be aware that the DYOD simulation will have carry over and units may
increase in quality from one battle to the next. The weapon values are different for various types
of weapons that are listed on the template for infantry, cavalry and artillery.
You are not required to enter a unit in every possible row of
the template. You may have up to four brigades of infantry with up to six
regiments per brigade, but you can use few if you want. Cavalry and Artillery
are also optional. Simply leave zeros in the unused rows, and they will not
register any points.
Budgets:
You will be working from two budgets of points: Units and
Commanders.
Unit Budget: Your unit point budget is 41,500
points. These are the total points for all infantry, cavalry and artillery
used.
Commander Budget: You commander point budget is 120.
This is the total points for all commanders assigned. Every regiment must be
part of a brigade (even if it is a one-regiment brigade) and the brigade must
have a commander. Every battery must have a commander. The points are allocated
across the commander attributes, which affect performance in the field.
Your Persona
You will be given the rank of Major General. Your division’s
number will be assigned in the order that the templates are received (1st
to submit will be 1st Division, etc.).
1.
Enter
your persona’s name in cell C13. (You can use any name you want.)
2.
Enter
a number from 0 to 6 in cells G13, H13, I13, J13
3.
Enter
a number from 0 to 4 in cell K13
4.
Enter
a number from 0 to 6 in cell L13.
These are your commander attributes that correspond to the

Order of Battle
The DYOD template allows you to organize your infantry into
your order of battle. You may have from one to four infantry brigades and from
one to six regiments per brigade. Each brigade (even if it has only a single
regiment) is assigned a commander.
Brigade Commanders
For each brigade you set up, you will assign a brigade
commander. Brigade commanders with two
or more regiments in their brigade will be given the rank of brigadier general.
Brigade commander with a single regiment in their brigade will be given the
rank of colonel.
1.
Enter the name of the brigade commander in
column C.
2.
Enter the command attributes of the brigade
commander into columns G through L in the same manner that you entered them for
your persona.
Infantry Regiments
Each regiment you set up must be in a brigade with a brigade
commander. To set up a regiment:
1.
Unit
Designation: Enter the regiment’s designation in column B. This would be a
number the state in which the regiment was raised (e.g. 35th
Louisiana, 167th Pennsylvania, etc.) If you use a designation that
has already been submitted by another player, it will be changed to the next
closest available designation (e.g. 166th Pennsylvania instead of
167th Pennsylvania).
2.
Commanders
Name: Enter a name for the regimental commander in column C.
3.
Strength:
Enter the number of men in the regiment into column D. The maximum number of
men allowed is 900.
4.
Quality:
Enter the unit’s quality into column E. This should be a number from 1 to 6,
representing the following:

Points: Column M will reflect the total points for
the regiment (strength x quality x weapon type). The total points per brigade
are found below it and the total infantry points used so far can be found in
cell M14. Increase or decrease strength, quality or weapon type to change you
point value to remain within budget.
Cavalry
Optional Cavalry
Cavalry is not required, but you may have up to six
regiments of cavalry organized into a cavalry brigade. Any cavalry regiments may be detached for
independent service in a simulation. Cavalry weapons have a relatively high
point value, which takes into account not only the weapon, but maintaining a
mount for the cavalryman.
Commander
If any cavalry is used, you must assign a cavalry command in
the same manner that you set up your persona and infantry brigade commanders.
If two or more cavalry regiments are used, the cavalry commander will be given
the rank of brigadier general. If only a single regiment is used, he will be
given the rank of colonel.
Cavalry Regiments
Cavalry regiments are set up in the same manner as infantry
regiments, but the weapon types vary.
Cavalry weapon types are:

Monitoring Your Point Budget
Rows 9 and 10 of the template allow you to monitor your
point budget. Cells D9 and D10 must be 0
or above when the template it submitted.
GOOD LUCK! It will not be an easy task, but you can take
comfort in knowing that all other players will have the same point budget!
