Command Simulations

There are many types of command simulations. Currently, the most advanced American Civil War command simulation engine available to gamers is Scourge of War. It is a versatile game that can be modded (modified) by users and has a number of expansion packs. Scourge of War allows real time multiplayer games.

Before Scourge of War, there was Take Command Second Manassas (TC2M). TC2M is an excellent Civil War game that has the same versatility of Scourge of War, but was limited to single player games. (One of the lead designers of TC2M went on to form Norbsoft Development and create Scourge of War in part to address the multiplayer issue.)

While waiting for Scourge of War, some members of TC2M community created a command simulation concept using the single player TC2M game. The command simulations gave players the command experience of issuing orders based on reports from subordinates and limited information. This was done by having one person (the simulation host) playing TC2M based on orders from the players, each of whom is assigned a command.  The simulations are run as turn-based games and the host sends back reports after each turn, with which the players (commanders) try to interpret the military situation and issue new orders. Players often get a realistic experience of the "fog of war" and difficulty in coordination.

TC2M-based simulations continue to run with a small community. One recent series of simulations was THE WAR IN ARKANSAS SERIES, which pitted two fictional armies against each other over several campaigns. DYOD is another fictional series of several short, linked engagements.
